Prior and current subjects involve basic and applied research, theoretical and experimental work. Past work focused on semiconductor device fabrication for an aerospace application for problems in astrophysics and THz spectroscopy. Interests: widespread in many aspects of physics, biology, physical chemistry, biotechnology, sensors, plasma diagnostics, biochemistry, and life science.

Teaching experience

  • 2003-2014: head of undergraduate B.Sc. physical chemistry experimental courses and seminars (4. Term compulsory courses for main field biochemistry and chemistry students and for students who progress to the master of education at Ruhr-University Bochum - 16 hours/week + 2 office hours/week for seminar preparation up to 180 students in the summer semester).
  • supervisor of 6. Term (M.Sc.) chemistry and biochemistry advanced practical course in microscopy
  • supervisor of 7. Term biochemistry modules: infrared laser scanning microscopy of living cells
  • 1999-2014: supervisor and lecturer of students from biochemistry, chemistry, and physics in problem solving classes (thermodynamics, quantum mechanics, spectroscopy), seminars, and during experimental work of B.Sc., M.Sc., diploma and Ph.D. candidates at Ruhr-University Bochum.
  • Teaching before 1999:
  • occasional lectures taught at UC Berkeley and at the Technical University Berlin and in group seminars at DLR, LBNL, CfPA/UCB (until 1999).
  • volunteer public lecturer at Sternwarte Neanderhöhe Hochdahl e.V. Chemical microscope

The animation shows a measurement of water influx into living cells by changing the buffer medium from HBSS (Hanks balanced salt solution) to a mixture of 1:1 HBSS and bi-distilled water. The image was constructed from fluorescence microscopic images in a confocal microscope using calcein AM as a fluorophore. Context see cover article by E. Bründermann et al. in a collaboration with Frank Petrat. Selected as Hot Article and featured in Chemical Science and Chemistry World News of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Hepatocyte (red) on a glass substrate (blue) studied with an atomic force microscope. The liver cell has a diameter of approximately 25 µm and a height of 1.2 µm. On the right and lower right of the image two round depressions of the lipid membrane with a diameter of 5 µm and a depth of 150 nm are visible corresponding to the positions of two cell nuclei. A chemical nanoscope can identifies each molecule within this membrane for a comprehensive understanding.
