Research fields - Type of positions - Take the initiative

Positions and jobs (valid until the closing date) are available at the Institute for Beam Physics and Technology (IBPT: Prof. Dr. Anke-Susanne Müller (director), Prof. Dr. Matthias Fuchs, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Steffen Grohmann). Link to general information for students, doctoral reseachers, engineers, scientists and researchers. For persons beyond the PhD level: you should have a solid background in the institute's fields of interest and have experience in at least one of the following: particle/electron accelerators, diagnostics, lasers, data science and AI.

Research fields: our focus in accelerator physics is on non-equilibrium and non-linear science, beam and laser plasma dynamics including energy responsible research and health research in the field of radiation therapy. This includes ultra-short signals such as femtosecond pulses and attosecond metrology. A focus area is also physics-informed and energy-informed AI, machine learning and especially in world-wide leading reinforcement learning for real-time control of particle accelerators. Energy and physics research is done in collaboration with the Energy Lab at KITTEN, especially considering renewable energies, photovoltaics, new cooling concepts, high-temperature superconductor (HTS) technologies from materials to novel magnets and undulators, and sustainable components and systems together with industry partners. In collaboration with the KIT Center MathSEE inverse problems and algorithm acceleration is tackled. Health research is done in collaboration with the Heidelberger Ion Beam Therapy Center and partners such as the DKFZ in Heidelberg and the newly founded KIT Center of Health Technologies.

Type of positions: positions can be in physics, computer science and engineering concerned with accelerators, ultra-fast lasers, laser plasma acceleration, high-speed and high-throughput diagnostics, their associated technologies such as THz, RF and electronics, information technologies, computer science, machine learning, as well as in a variety of related science and technology topics. Please browse our accelerator technology platform information - ATP @ KIT -, our publications, and view our recent KIT accelerator technology movie, produced by IBPT, for impressions.

Timing - Announcement of open positions: research and development in Germany is funded in various projects with periods of a few to several years. Some projects can last for several periods after evaluations. Announcements of successful funding are often on very short notice by the funding agencies, employment opportunities and intended placements are often as soon as possible, while the announcement of these opportunities in various job channels can take some time as well as the final placement due to administrative procedures including interviews or visa arrangements.

Take the initiative: If you are interested to join our team, please contact the team or group leaders in the areas you are interested in. Do not hesitate to also contact our central office at e-mail: jobs∂ with your inquiry ideally containing your initiative application (in German: Initiativbewerbung) with possible fields of interest, availability e.g. earliest or desired starting date, and the usual accompanying materials. Our office will relay your application to the institute professors and department heads. Doctoral researchers with the goal to complete a project with a PhD, please see further information for your initiative application.
